Overview¶

The UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO) is the premier pre-university chemistry competition in the United Kingdom, organised annually by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). It serves as the official selection pathway for the United Kingdom's team at the IChO.
The RSC is a registered charity and the UK's professional body and learned society for chemistry, formed in 1980 through the merger of several predecessor organisations including the Chemical Society of London (founded 1841). The UKChO is administered by a dedicated Olympiad working group within the RSC's education division. The working group sets the examination papers, provides mark schemes, and oversees the entire selection process. Funding is provided through the RSC's charitable and publishing activities, and participation is free of charge for registered schools and colleges.
The competition is open to post-16 students (typically Year 12 and Year 13 / Sixth Form) at schools and colleges across the British Isles. International students enrolled at UK institutions may sit Round 1 and earn awards but are not eligible for the national team.
Competition Format¶
Round One¶
- When: January
- Where: Student's own school or college under examination conditions
- Duration: 2 hours
- Format: 5 or 6 complex free-response (essay-style) questions, each with multiple sub-parts. Total marks are typically around 84.
- Content: Questions require students to apply A-Level (or equivalent) chemistry knowledge to unfamiliar, real-world scenarios, integrating mathematical reasoning across multiple branches of chemistry.
- Marking: Teachers mark scripts using RSC-provided schemes and submit scores centrally. The RSC then sets award thresholds.
- Awards: Approximately the top 8% of participants receive Gold, the next 16% receive Silver, and the next 12% receive Bronze. Certificates are issued to all medallists.
Round Two / Training Camp¶
- When: Late March to early April
- Where: University of Cambridge
- Participants: Approximately 25--30 of the highest-scoring eligible students from Round One are invited.
- Format: A four-day residential programme combining advanced lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and formal assessments:
- Practical examination (approx. 4 hours): 3--4 laboratory experiments -- contributes 40% of the Round Two score.
- Theoretical examination: Approximately 8 questions going well beyond the A-Level syllabus -- contributes 60% of the score.
- Content at this stage routinely covers material at the boundary of undergraduate-level chemistry.
Final Team Selection¶
From the Round Two cohort, the RSC Olympiad working group selects 4 students to represent the United Kingdom at the International Chemistry Olympiad. The chosen team undergoes further intensive training and preparation before competing internationally in July.
Participation¶
The UKChO has grown into one of the largest national chemistry Olympiads in Europe. In the most recent edition, over 17,000 students from more than 1,100 schools and colleges across the British Isles submitted scores in Round One.
| Stage | Typical Numbers |
|---|---|
| Round One entrants | ~17,000 students from ~1,100+ schools |
| Round Two invitees | 25--30 students |
| IChO team | 4 students |
Success in the UKChO is widely recognised by competitive universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London. Top UKChO performers commonly go on to read chemistry, medicine, natural sciences, or engineering at leading UK universities. Several former UKChO medallists have pursued research careers in academia and industry.
History¶
- 1980 -- The modern Royal Society of Chemistry is established through the merger of several predecessor organisations.
- 1984 -- The United Kingdom enters the IChO for the first time, fielding a four-student team. The UKChO is established as the domestic selection mechanism.
- 1990s -- The competition grows steadily in participation and prestige among UK sixth forms and colleges.
- 1994 -- A UK student achieves a top-ten global finish at the IChO, setting a national record at the time.
- 2009 -- The UK hosts the 41st International Chemistry Olympiad at the University of Cambridge (18--27 July), bringing together teams from over 60 countries.
- 2011 -- A UK team member achieves 3rd place globally at the IChO -- the highest individual ranking in the UK's competition history.
- 2018 -- The UK team wins three Gold and one Silver at the IChO in Prague/Bratislava, the best overall UK result to date, placing the UK joint-third in the global medal table.
Performance at IChO: | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Honorable Mentions | |---|---|---|---| | 19 | 78 | 68 | 1 |
